About Los Nevados National Park

Los Nevados National Park

Los Nevados National Park, established in 1974, encompasses approximately 58,300 hectares across the departments of Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, and Tolima in Colombia. Situated in the northern Andes, the park is dominated by several volcanic peaks including Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado de Santa Isabel, and Nevado del Tolima, some of which retain permanent snow caps despite being close to the equator. The park’s altitude ranges from about 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) to over 5,300 meters (17,388 feet), supporting diverse ecosystems such as Andean forests, subpáramo, páramo, and glacial landscapes. The páramo ecosystem, unique to the northern Andes, is critical for water regulation and sustains a wide variety of endemic flora such as frailejones (Espeletia spp.) and abundant mosses. Wildlife includes spectacled bears, mountain tapirs, Andean condors, and numerous amphibians and bird species.

Visitors are drawn to Los Nevados for hiking and mountaineering, particularly ascents of Nevado del Ruiz and Nevado del Tolima. Popular trekking routes include the valley of Cocora with its iconic wax palms and lake Sonso. The park also offers opportunities for birdwatching, horseback riding, and photography. The volcanic activity of Nevado del Ruiz, last erupted in 1985 with significant impact on the nearby town of Armero, is a sobering reminder of the area’s geologic activity, monitored carefully by authorities.

Access to the park is seasonal due to weather conditions, with the dry seasons between December and March and July to August providing the best opportunities for exploration. The park’s high elevation and rugged terrain demand proper preparation for altitude acclimatization and weather variability. Los Nevados National Park is an emblematic natural and cultural treasure of Colombia, blending dramatic volcanic landscapes with delicate ecosystems and making it a top destination for adventure and conservation education.
